Men’s Lightweight Crew Races at Head of the Charles

THE BASICS:

- Event: Head of the Charles Regatta

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Charles River)

- The Lead: In its final event of the fall, the MIT men's lightweight crew team competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta this past weekend. On Saturday, the Engineers finished 19th in the Club 8+ and then placed eighth and 15th in the Lightweight 8+ and Lightweight 4+, respectively, on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Starting with a high bow number, the Lightweight 8+ had to pass two crews during the race. As neither crew yielded, MIT was forced to work its way around. The first pas was in the Powerhouse stretch, but the more impactful was the second. Passing Harvard "B", the Engineers were forced to the outside of the Elliot turn, which added substantial distance and time. Despite the obstructions, MIT ranked eighth out of 15 boats with a solid time of 14:32.175.

- While passing Baltimore in the first 1,000 meters of the race, the Club 8+ was forced to put its oars over the buoys and unfortunately had one its oars get entangled by a buoy cable. Despite this incident, the Engineers battled back to finish 19th out of 39 entries with a time of 15:45.861.

- During the Lightweight 4+ race, MIT clashed oars near the Weeks footbridge. Unfortunately, the Engineers weren't able to recover as they logged a time of 17:57.888 which placed them 15th out of 16 boats.
