The Lead:Â The MIT sailing team wrapped up another weekend of competitive sailing with four regattas over the weekend.
Â
OPEN ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS | New London, Conn. |Â
8th of 18 (248 points)
- The Engineers put up a strong finish against some of the top competitors in the country, many of which will be competing at Nationals. The light wind conditions were a challenge and caused some of the MIT alternate sailors a chance to compete, but they were essential in helping prepare the boats and teammates at each rotation.
Â
- MIT moved up a few spots on day two of racing thanks to junior
Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) and graduate student
Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) in the 'A' Division. The team concluded the day with a third-place finish to take fourth in the division. They sailed a consistent series with excellent risk management in a strong current and shifting winds on the Thames River.
Â
- Graduate student
Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.) and senior
Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.) put together a 12th-place finish in the 'B' Division with 144 points, beating out the boat from Stanford by one point. They finished in the top 10 in nine of 14 races.
Â
YALE WOMEN'S INTERCONFERENCE | New Haven, Conn. | 4th of 16 (93 points)
Â
- Wind conditions were not ideal for sailing on day one with little racing on day one. Day two was slightly better with eight races completed in each division.
Â
- Sophomores
Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and
Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) finished sixth in the 'A' Division with 46 points and finished in the top five in five of eight races.
Â
- In the 'B' Division, sophomore
Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) and junior
Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) finished in fifth with 47 points. The duo finished with four top-five finishes.
Â
RUDI OBERG TROPHY | Cambridge, Mass. | 8th of 17 (316 points)
Â
- In Division 'A' junior
Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and senior
Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine) finished sixth with 104 points. They won one race and totaled five top-five finishes.
Â
- Senior
Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) and sophomore
Yitan Zhu (Katy, Texas) finished seventh in the 'B' Division with 84 points. They had one victory and eight overall top-five finishes. Â

Â
- First-year
Alex Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) led the way for MIT with a second-place finish with 39 points, just three behind
Tyler Nash of URI who rallied by winning the final three races to win the event. Horne finished in the top three in seven of the nine races.
Â
- Sophomore
Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.) finished 10th with 92 points, followed by first-year
Lucas Escandon (Brick, N.J.) in 12th with 103 points.
