No. 17 Women's Soccer Defeats Smith, 4-0; Captures NEWMAC Regular Season Title

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 17 MIT - 4, Smith - 0
 
- Records: MIT (14-4-2, 8-1-1 NEWMAC), Smith (4-9-4, 1-6-3 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Northampton, Mass. (Soccer Field)
 
- The Lead: The No. 17 MIT women's soccer team clinched the NEWMAC Regular Title for the 10th-consecutive year as the Engineers took down Smith, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Graduate student Gillian Schiffer (Arlington, Va.) scored her first goal as an Engineer at 41:51 when she took a pass from senior Kaitlin Zareno (Montebello, Calif.) and put the ball into the back of the goal to make it 1-0 MIT.
 
- 50 seconds into the second half, graduate student Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) scored her ninth goal of the season to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead.
 
- Sophomore Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored at 57:16 to give MIT a 3-0 advantage, and junior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) tallied her tenth goal of the season at 61:43 to make it a 4-0 contest.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Seniors Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) split time in goal for MIT as each recorded a save. Castle earned the win to improve to 9-1-0.
 
- Rowlett leads the team and conference in goals (10) and ranks second in points (24).
 
- Groff is second on the team and in the NEWMAC with nine goals and leads the way with 25 points. Her goal gives her 50 in her career, just two shy of the MIT program record. She is also tied for second all-time with 127 career points.
 
- English is third on the team with six goals and 13 points.
 
- In their 10 NEWMAC matches in the regular season, MIT allowed just one goal.
 
- The Engineers held the advantage in shots (15-2), shots on goal (11-2), and corner kicks (13-1).
 
UP NEXT:
 
- The Engineers will host the semifinal match of the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday, November 3rd on Roberts Field.  MIT will play the winner of the four vs. five matchup featuring Clark and Springfield that will take place on Tuesday, November 1st.
