- The Lead: In a contest featuring two top-20 teams with unblemished NEWMAC records, it was the No. 19 MIT women's soccer team that came out with a thrilling 1-0 victory over 12th-ranked Babson on Roberts Field on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first 45 minutes of play did not yield a goal as both teams had excellent scoring chances.
- Babson earned four corner kicks in the match's first five minutes, but the MIT defense prevented the Beavers from scoring.
- At 15:48 senior
Stephanie Howe (Geneva, Ill.) looked to give MIT a 1-0 lead, but her shot pinged off the crossbar and out of play.
Izzy Lynch put a shot on goal that senior
Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) saved to keep the game scoreless.
- Howe looked to put MIT on the board 46 seconds into the second half, but her shot was turned away by
Morgan Fedosiewich. Graduate student
Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) put an excellent shot on goal, but it rang off the post.
- A scrum for the ball on the Beavers' side of the field turned into a goal for the Engineers when Howe tipped the ball to a waiting
Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) who fired a shot from almost 20 yards out past a diving Fedosiewich at 61:16.
- The Beavers upped the offensive pressure with a shot from
Caitlin Trott, but Castle made the save to secure the 1-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Castle made four saves to improve to 7-1-1 on the year with three shutouts.
- English is now tied for second on the team with five goals and ranks third with 11 points.
- MIT outshot Babson 10-7, but the Beavers held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and corner kicks (8-4).
