The Lead: A 9-2 run during the last 5:22 of regulation helped Emmanuel College pull away for a 60-52 victory over MIT in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) paced the Engineers with a game-high 15 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT jumped out to a 9-2 lead after a pair of free throws by first-year
Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) at the 7:28 mark. Emmanuel battled back, tying the score three times before going in front, 19-18 on a three-pointer with 45 seconds on the clock. The Engineers replied with a layup by sophomore
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) with 22 seconds to go but the Saints drained two of three free throws with six seconds remaining to take a 21-20 edge at the end of first quarter.
- A layup by Lebrun put MIT in front after 38 seconds elapsed in the second stanza, however, Emmanuel generated seven unanswered points to take a 28-22 lead midway through the quarter. The Engineers chipped away at the deficit and came within one (31-30) courtesy of two free throws by Choi with 1:37 left. Exactly 25 seconds later, Emmanuel hit one of two free throws to enter halftime with a two-point edge.
- Layups by Lebrun and Choi during the first 47 seconds of the third quarter sparked an 8-2 run which resulted in a 38-34 lead at the 5:16 mark. The Saints replied with a 13-4 run as a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining gave them a 47-42 lead.
- MIT chipped away at the deficit as four free throws by sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) and a layup by Choi narrowed the gap to 51-50 at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter. Emmanuel drained a layup 1:17 later and after almost three minutes of scoreless play it added another layup. Following an exchange of possessions, two free throws by graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) brought the Engineers within four (55-51) with 1:11 left to play. During their next trip down the court, the Saints knocked down a three-pointer with 41 seconds remaining, creating enough of a cushion as they went on to record a 60-52 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Nwogu registered 11 points and eight rebounds while Lebrun tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a block. Junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) chipped in three assists.
