The Lead: A 19-5 run during the final four minutes of the first half gave MIT a lead it would not relinquish as it held on to defeat UMass Dartmouth, 97-91, in a non-conference men's basketball game on Saturday. Sophomore
Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore
Kade Killeen (Austin, Texas) both produced 27 points and seven assists for the Engineers. One of five players to reach double-digits in scoring,
Dhalyn Sanders-Dyer powered the Corsairs with 26 points, four assists, and four steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The first half was closely played as there were 10 lead changes and seven ties. Three-pointers by Sanders-Dyer and
Jackson Zancan gave UMass Dartmouth a 30-25 lead with 5:38 on the clock. Lin knocked down a trey but Sanders-Dyer replied with one of his own. Lin followed with a jumper which was immediately matched by Zancan, reestablishing the five-point cushion. MIT responded with back-to-back three-pointers by Killeen, sparking the pivotal 19-5 run which resulted in a 49-40 advantage at halftime.
Â
- After a layup by
Isaac Percy just 12 seconds into the second stanza, a three-pointer from Lin created the Engineers' largest lead of the day at 52-42. The Corsairs stayed within striking distance for most of the half as a Sanders-Dyer layup narrowed the gap to 67-66 at the 9:37 mark. A pair of free throws by Killeen kicked off a 9-2 spurt but UMass Dartmouth continued to attack, coming within one point (90-89) courtesy of Perry's trey with 1:23 left to play. First-year
Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) created some breathing room by sinking both of his free throws, however,
Jayquan Leonard drained a layup, once again bringing the visitors within one with 52 seconds remaining. Delgado-Gonzalez responded with a layup of his own as MIT went 3-of-4 at the charity stripe during the final 21 seconds to secure the victory.
