The Lead: UMass Dartmouth outscored MIT, 23-7, during the last six minutes of regulation to record an 82-72 victory in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) led all players with a career-high 20 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and three steals for the Engineers. One of five players to reach double-digits in scoring for the Corsairs,
Jordan Moretti tallied 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- After a back-and-forth start, a layup by sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) kicked off a string of 10 unanswered points which resulted in a 22-13 lead with 1:14 left in the first quarter. UMass Dartmouth ended its scoring drought courtesy of a three-pointer by
Caroline Wilson with nine seconds remaining.
Â
- Following a layup by
Kaylin Zalewski just 12 seconds into the second stanza, a layup by first-year
Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) sparked a 17-6 run that gave the Engineers a 39-24 advantage at the 3:52 mark. The Corsairs countered with a three-point play by
Jayelin Lavigne, which set off a 12-2 run as
Teja Andrews' layup brought the visitors within 41-36 at halftime.
Â
- UMass Dartmouth carried the momentum into the third quarter as baskets by Zalewski, Moretti, and
Jessica Carroll put the visitors in front after 1:24 expired. A jumper by Nwogu during MIT's next possession produced the second of what would be 11 lead changes while three ties would occur during the remainder of the frame. A free throw from Andrews gave the Corsairs a 57-56 edge with five seconds remaining.
Â
- A layup by Pieper led to a 9-2 burst which put the Engineers ahead, 65-59, with 6:14 on the clock. UMass Dartmouth gradually mounted a 15-3 run as a layup by Andrews moved the score to 74-68 at the 2:11 mark. One free throw by Nwogu followed by two more from Pieper cut MIT's deficit in half with 1:27 to go, however, a three-pointer from
Melanie DeMeo set off an 8-1 game-ending run by the Corsairs.
Â
