- The Lead: In the 2022-23 season opener on Tuesday night, the MIT men's basketball team fell to visiting Husson University by an 89-57 final at Rockwell Cage.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Eagles got off to a strong start and built to a double-digit lead at 22-11 midway through the first following a layup from
Jeremy Moronta. Husson pushed the advantage up to as many as 14 before the Engineers embarked on an 11-2 run to make it a 32-27 game with 3:14 left in the first half. Four different players scored for MIT in the run, including five points from first-year
Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.).
Â
- Husson answered with a run of its own though to close the half as Moronta and
J Thomas sparked the Eagles with back-to-back threes, en route to a 40-30 advantage at the break.
Â
- In the opening three minutes of the second half, MIT pulled back within five at 44-39 following a layup from first-year
Parker Spann (Omaha, Neb.). A three from Husson's
Justice Kendall and a layup from
Eric Ahlers pushed the lead back to double digits at 49-39 as the Eagles eventually pulled away for the non-conference victory in just the second all-time meeting between the two schools.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Minicozzi led the Engineers with 19 points, including 5-for-8 shooting from three-point land in his MIT career debut. Spann finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore
