Women’s Basketball Falls to Roger Williams, 71-47, in Season Opener

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: Roger Williams University 71, MIT 47

- The Lead: The MIT women's basketball team fell to Roger Williams University, 71-47, in its first game of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday night. Sophomore Kamsi Nwogu (Alongonquin, Ill.) paced the Engineers with 10 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- A layup by Nwogu brought MIT within 6-4 with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter. On its ensuing possession, RWU drained a jumper, sparking a 16-5 run to close out the frame.
 
- The Engineers chipped away at the deficit as they narrowed the gap to 28-21 courtesy of a three-pointer by first-year Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.). The Hawks replied with a 12-2 run to enter halftime with a 40-23 advantage.
 
- The third quarter was a balanced affair as both teams generated 15 points, moving the score to 55-38.
 
- Graduate student Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) sank two free throws just over two minutes into the fourth quarter. RWU countered with 14 unanswered points in a span of five minutes to put the game out of reach.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Weiser posted nine points while Pieper tallied six points, two assists, and two steals. First-year Ruby Adkins (Harrisonburg, Va.) chipped in four rebounds.
 
- MIT had the upper hand in bench scoring (25-12) but the Hawks led the way in points off turnovers (18-12), points in the paint (38-18), second-chance points (20-9), and fast break points (7-0).
 
- The Engineers shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor, 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from three-point range, and 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from the free throw line.
 
- RWU shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) at the charity stripe.
