The Lead: The MIT women's basketball team raced out to a 17-point lead and never looked back as it went on to defeat Mount Holyoke College, 85-31, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Tinah Hong (Wilmette, Ill.) paced the Engineers' balanced attack with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Annika Brooks powered the Lyons with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- A layup by senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) right off the opening tip sparked a string of 17 unanswered points during the first 3:38 of the game. A jumper by
Isabel Cordes put Mount Holyoke on the board at the 4:37 mark. The remainder of the scoring was balanced as the Engineers' lead moved to 26-6 at the end of the quarter.

- MIT continued to control the action the second stanza as it outscored the Lyons, 17-6, and took a 43-12 advantage heading into halftime.

- A three-pointer by senior
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) kicked off a 17-2 run that spanned six minutes and increased the Engineers' margin to 60-14. A put-back by Brooks ended Mount Holyoke's scoring drought with 3:20 on the clock, however, MIT went on to establish a 67-20 lead at the end of the third quarter.

- Both teams traded baskets to start the final frame, but the Engineers ended up outscoring the Lyons, 18-11.

Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) scored 12 points as she went 6-of-6 from the floor while first-year
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) produced nine points and six rebounds. Pieper finished with eight points, five assists, and four rebounds as senior
Anna Broski (Stillman Valley, Ill.) chipped in seven points.

Cal McGonagle registered eight points and six rebounds as Cordes notched two assists and a steal.

- MIT ended the day with advantages in rebounds (45-27), points in the paint (38-12), points off turnovers (32-4), second-chance points (28-10), and bench scoring (52-2).

- The Engineers shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range, and 100 percent (11-of-11) from the free throw line.
