The Lead: Babson College outscored MIT, 20-9, in the fourth quarter en route to a 54-51 come-from-behind victory in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night. Senior
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led the Engineers with a game-high 21 points while
Samantha Smith tallied a team-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals for the Beavers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The first quarter was a defensive battle that saw MIT emerge with an 11-9 edge after trailing, 5-4, midway through the frame.
Â
- Two free throws by senior
Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and a layup by senior
Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) increased the Engineers' cushion early in the second stanza. The Beavers battled back, tying the game twice, the second at 17 on two free throws from
Camilla Silk with 4:05 on the clock. MIT replied with a layup by first-year
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.), sparking an 8-2 run which resulted in a 25-19 halftime lead.
Â
- The Engineers carried the momentum into the third quarter as Sougstad's jumper coupled with treys by first-year
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) and Antonakakis increased the advantage to 33-21 after 2:07 elapsed. Despite the deficit Babson continued to attack, coming within five (39-34) courtesy of
Abby Miller's three-pointer with 2:08 on the clock. Antonakakis responded with a trifecta of her own, registering the final basket of the quarter.
Â
- A jumper by first-year
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) 13 seconds into the final frame reestablished MIT's double-digit lead at 44-34. Back-to-back Smith baskets kicked off nine unanswered points by the Beavers. A fast-break layup by Gallagher midway through the quarter gave the Engineers a 46-43 cushion. However, Babson generated another 9-0 burst during the next three minutes to go ahead for good. A three-pointer by Miller put the visitors in front while layups by
Megan Bauman and
Rachel McMenemy created some breathing room.
Â
- Choi buried a three-pointer with 1:02 remaining and then two free throws by Sougstad narrowed the gap to 52-51 with 7.4 seconds left. Following a trio of fouls,
Madison Odam secured the victory by draining both shots at the charity stripe with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
