Â
- The Lead: In the final game of the three-game season-opening trip to Baltimore, the MIT baseball team dropped a 7-1 final to No. 2 ranked SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Dragons got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first as
Hunter Holliday was hit by a pitch to reach base, advanced to third on a base hit and came home on a sacrifice fly by
Danny Coleman. The other run scored on a balk as
Paul Franzese crossed the plate with one out.
Â
- MIT cut the margin in half in the top of the third as senior
Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.) reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a walk by junior
Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.). After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Cortland pitcher
Zack Durant walked junior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) to bring home Aiello for the 2-1 score.
Â
- In the top of the fourth, the Dragons loaded the bases on three straight hits before MIT junior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) struck out the next two batters. SUNY Cortland struck for a pair of two-out runs on a two-RBI single to right center by
Scott Giordano that scored
Antonio Pragana and
Matthew Krafft to make it a 4-1 game. First-year
James Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) came on in relief for MIT and got the Engineers out of the jam with a strikeout of Coleman.
Â
-
Mat Bruno led off the fifth with a triple to center and scored on a groundout by Krafft for the 5-1 margin. In the bottom of the frame, first-year
Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) was hit by a pitch and sophomore
Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) picked up a ground-rule double to give MIT a pair of runners in scoring position. Cortland reliever
Patrick Dalton worked his way out of the jam as he struck out the final two batters to send the game to the sixth at 5-1.
Â
- The Dragons added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings, including a solo homer by Krafft in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Cartwright went 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts as he is now 0-1 on the season. Reliever
Dylan Beers picked up the win for the Dragons and is now 1-0 on the year.
