The Lead: MIT outscored Curry College, 8-1, in the first quarter en route to an 18-4 victory in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Sunday. Graduate student
Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) generated eight goals, including four during the open frame, for the Engineers.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Senior
Andy Shin (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) connected on a pass from classmate
Gavin Vandenberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) 17 seconds after the opening faceoff. Curry quickly evened the score, however, MIT rattled off seven unanswered goals to take control of the game. Gebhardt started the rally with a natural hat trick, followed by a strike from Vandenberg, another goal by Gebhardt, a man-down marker from Vandenberg, and then a goal by sophomore
Bennett Stankovits (Rumson, N.J.) which was set up by classmate
Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.).
Â
- A solo effort by Gebhardt less than a minute into the second quarter extended the Engineers' advantage to 9-1. The Colonels ended their scoring drought at the 11:31 mark, but back-to-back blasts by junior
Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.) kicked off a 4-0 burst that gave MIT a 13-2 lead at halftime.
Â
- The second-half scoring was more balanced; however, the Engineers had a 5-2 edge during the final 30 minutes.
Â

Andrew Johnson (Dover, Mass.) generated 10 groundballs and three caused turnovers as first-year
Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) collected 11 groundballs and won 15 of his 21 faceoffs.
Â
- In net, senior
Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo.) registered 8 saves in 42 minutes of action while junior
David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) turned away two shots in 10 minutes. Junior
