The Lead: The MIT men's lacrosse team generated 10 straight goals spanning the second and third quarters, helping it pull away for a 20-4 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Graduate student
Ryan Gebhardt (Baldwinsvile, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with five goals and one assist while
Calvin McKenna paced the Leopards with one goal and one assist.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- For the second game in a row, senior
Andy Shin (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) opened the scoring for MIT as he found the back of the net after 1:02 elapsed. Gebhardt quickly followed with a solo strike and then Shin redirected a feed from junior
Tory Lentine (Flemington, N.J.). First-year
Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) capped the Engineers' scoring burst with 11:17 on the clock. Wentworth ended the shutout midway through the quarter courtesy of McKenna's unassisted marker. Shortly after the ensuing faceoff, senior
Gavin Vandenberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) connected a feed from first-year
Andrew Merrell (Monument, Colo.) while another goal from Gebhardt late in the quarter gave MIT a 6-1 lead.
Â
- Sophomore
Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.), Gebhardt, and Vandenberg increased the Engineers' advantage early in the second stanza. However, the Leopards narrowed the gap to 9-2 at the 4:23 mark when
Erik Vogt scored a on pass from
Anthony D'Avolio. The Engineers replied with three goals, which closed out the first half but also sparked the pivotal 10-0 run that moved the score to 19-2 at the end of the third quarter.
Â
- Wentworth ended its scoring drought on a man-up goal by
Logan Maklan with 9:21 left to play. First-year
Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded MIT's final goal, a man-up strike with just under six minutes remaining. Shortly after the faceoff,
Erik Madden buried the last goal of the game.
