Engineers, Anchormen Play to Wild 14-14 Non-Conference Tie

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (1-4-1); Rhode Island College (3-3-1)

- Scores: MIT 14, Rhode Island College 14

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)

- The Lead: In a wild back-and-forth game on Tuesday afternoon, the MIT baseball team rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the ninth inning as the Engineers finished in a 14-14 tie with Rhode Island College as the game was called due to darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Anchormen took an early 2-0 through two innings, including a Lucas Pierce solo home run to right center. MIT countered with six hits and six runs in the bottom of the third to take a lead 6-2 lead as a two-RBI by senior Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.) led the offense in that inning.

- RIC tied the game at 6-6 with a four-run fourth inning on four hits, including a two-RBI double to right by Daniel Trzepacz that plated Cameron Santerre and Izaiah Rivera. The Engineers moved two runners into scoring position in the bottom of the fourth as they chased RIC starter Andrew Sears from the game. MIT put up five runs in the inning with three unearned, including two on an RBI single to left field from first-year Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) that scored junior Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Aiello.

- The visitors scored two runs each in the sixth and eighth innings, including a long two-run homer by Joey Coro in the sixth as the game stood at 11-10 in favor of MIT heading to the ninth. That lead quickly turned into a 14-11 lead as darkness was closing in, with MIT having one more chance to win the game.

- Hard-throwing Shaun Gemelin came on for the ninth and after walking the bases loaded on just 13 pitches, he picked up a strikeout and a pop out to get the Anchormen within one out of the win. Sophomore Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) drew the bases-loaded walk to pull MIT within 14-12, followed by a two-RBI single up the middle by pinch hitter Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) to tie the game at 14-14. Gamelin picked up a strikeout to end the inning and the game as the umpires ruled that it was too dark to continue.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Anchormen held a slight 13-12 advantage in hits, including five for extra bases.

- For MIT, Aiello, junior Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and Gumbs each had two hits in the game, with Aiello and Tubbs also finishing with three runs batted in. For RIC, Pierce led five players with multiple hits as he was 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI.

- Senior Jonah Scott (Oak Park, Calif.) got the start for MIT, going 3.2 innings with six runs allowed (just two earned) with six strikeouts. Sears went 3.1 innings for the Anchormen in the start, followed by Murray with 4.2 innings of relief where he scattered four hits with no earned runs and six strikeouts.
