The Lead: Roger Williams University generated 10 unanswered goals and then held on for a 16-13 win over the MIT women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night. Junior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied four goals and five draw controls for the Engineers while
Mandy Beck produced two goals, three assists, and six draw controls for the Hawks.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT scored five goals during the first 7:56 of the game. First-year
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) found the back of the net first, followed by sophomore
Meredith Arterburn's (Cooksville, Md.) free-position goal. Rabenold buried back-to-back strikes, including a free-position goal while being down a player, and then junior
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) capped the run.
Â
- Roger Williams replied with four goals during the last 5:06 of the quarter, including three in a two-minute span.
Lily Cunningham connected on a pass from
Devon Sarazin, as goals from
Brooke McErlain,
Nikki Norton, and
Campbell Haller quickly followed.
Â
- Early in the second quarter, junior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) redirected a feed from Goetz, giving the Engineers a 6-4 cushion. The game remained scoreless until
Julia Kelley buried a shot for the Hawks at the 4:45 mark. Exactly nine seconds later, Beck gathered the draw control and set up Sarazin. Beck was a factor in the next two goals as she earned an assist on a blast from
Karli Chapin and then scored with 20 seconds remaining, giving RWU an 8-6 edge at halftime.
Â
- The Hawks carried the momentum into the third quarter as they rattled off six straight goals, with Norton and McErlain both scoring twice. A solo effort by Rabenold ended MIT's scoring drought with 2:34 on the clock. Gambino narrowed the gap to 14-8 as she registered an extra-player free-position goal with five seconds left.
Â
- Rabenold scored 33 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Kelley and McErlain quickly increased the Hawks' lead to 16-9. Despite the deficit the Engineers continued to attack, tallying four goals during the last 7:26 of the game. A free-position goal from Gambino started the rally and less than a minute later, Arterburn found the back of the net. Gambino recorded her fourth goal of the night at the 5:49 mark as Pyon capped the scoring with an extra-player goal with 1:27 to go.
