The Lead: MIT generated 15 unanswered goals in the first half en route to an 18-6 win over Mount Holyoke College in the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse opener for both steams on Saturday. Junior
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) tallied a game-high five points as she dished out five assists for the Engineers while
Lucy Stone powered the Lyons with three goals, one assist, and three draw controls.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Sophomore
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) scored three of MIT's first four goals during the first 1:49 of the game. Goetz then assisted on four of the Engineers' next five goals as strikes by first-years
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and
Katie Hall (New York, N.Y.) resulted in an 11-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
Â
- In the second quarter, goals by junior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) sandwiched a goal by senior
Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) who quickly earned an assist on blast by first-year
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.).
Â
- Mount Holyoke ended the shutout almost three minutes into the third quarter courtesy of a solo effort by
Allie Brown. Sophomore
Nora Donnelly (Ridgewood, N.J.) increased MIT's advantage to 16-1 but the Lyons replied with goals from
Emma Legacki and Stone.
Â
- Sophomore
Makena Armstrong (San Diego, Calif.) scored the first goal of her career 51 seconds into the fourth quarter. Donnelly completed the hat trick as her free-position goal with 7:49 left moved the score to 18-3. Stone responded with back-to-back goals, including a free-position strike, and then set up Brown for the final goal of the game.
Â
