Baseball Drops 12-2 Final at No. 21 Chapman University

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (2-8-1); No. 21 Chapman (13-5)

- Scores: No. 21 Chapman 12, MIT 2

- Location: Orange, Calif. (Hart Park)

- The Lead: On Tuesday night at Hart Park, the MIT baseball team dropped a 12-2 road final at No. 21 ranked Chapman University. The game was the fourth for the team on the six-game spring break trip to Southern California.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Panthers pushed across a single run in the bottom of the second off of MIT starter Casey Bussone (Danvers, Mass.). Chapman put up six runs in the fifth, led by a Nick Kondo grand slam that chased Bussone from the game after five innings of work. Kai Osaka added a solo home run in the sixth for the 8-0 lead before the Engineers got on the board in the top of the seventh.

- With one out in the inning, sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) drove a ball up the middle that scored senior Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) and first-year Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) to make it an 8-2 margin. Josh Phillips capped off the scoring with another Chapman grand slam in the bottom of the inning to account for the 12-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld led the MIT offense with a 4-for-5 day with two RBI, while five Panthers ended up with two hits each.

- On the mound, Bussone fell to 0-2 in the loss as he scattered eight hits and four strikeouts. Chapman had a staff day with the pitchers as Turner White picked up the win with two innings of hitless relief to move to 1-0 on the season.
