Rally Comes Up Short in 14-11 Road Loss at Redlands

THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (2-9-1); University of Redlands (11-7)

- Scores: University of Redlands 14, MIT 11

- Location: Redlands, Calif. (The Yard)

- The Lead: On Wednesday afternoon, the MIT baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning before dropping a 14-11 final to the University of Redlands at The Yard.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) scored on a groundout. The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the inning and then took a 6-1 lead in the second behind three hits and a pair of MIT errors.

- MIT got one back in the third as Schoenfeld came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.), followed by a two-RBI double to left by sophomore Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) to make it a 6-4 game. Redlands answered with a seven-run inning in the sixth behind a five-hit effort that included a two-RBI single through the left side by Jared Anderson for the 13-4 advantage.

- Schoenfeld scored an unearned run in the seventh, along with a solo homer to center from Finch as the game headed to the final inning at 14-6 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Engineers put together a five-hit, five-run effort that included two-RBI, extra-base hits by Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) and first-year Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas), to pull to within 14-11 before a strikeout ended the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Finch led the Engineers with a three-hit outing, along with two hits each from Schoenfeld, junior Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and junior Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.). Four Bulldogs registered multiple hits in the game as they held a narrow 13-12 edge in hits over MIT.

- Senior Adam Katz (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) took the loss for MIT to fall to 0-2 on the season as he allowed three hits and one earned run over 1.2 innings. Alec Aguayo was the winning pitcher in relief for Redlands as he is now 1-0 overall.

UP NEXT:

- MIT wraps up its six-game California trip on Thursday, March 24th as the team travels to Thousand Oaks to take on No. 17 Cal Lutheran for a 3 p.m. Pacific time start.
