- The Lead: Trailing by an 11-1 margin after five innings, the MIT baseball team rattled off 12 unanswered runs that included a six-run eighth inning to defeat No. 17 ranked Cal Lutheran by a 13-11 final on Thursday afternoon. The game caps a six-game spring break swing to California.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Kyle Reuser led off the game with a solo homer for the Kingsmen in the first as the hosts scored twice in both the first and second for the 4-0 lead. Cal Lutheran added five more runs in the third behind an
Austin Carrillo grand slam to make it 9-0 heading to the fourth.

- The Engineers got on the board in the fourth with a single run as sophomore
Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) singled up the middle to plate sophomore
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) for a 9-1 margin. After the Kingsmen scored a pair in the fifth, MIT put together a five-run, five-hit effort to go along with two Cal Lutheran errors to get within 11-6.

- MIT took the lead in the eighth with a six-run inning as Schoenfeld got the scoring started with a two-RBI double to right center by Schoenfeld that made it 11-8. Junior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) pulled MIT within one at 11-10 with a two-RBI single to right center, followed by a Finch double down the right field line that scored Sonandres to tie it at 11-11. The Engineers took the lead at 12-11 on a passed ball, followed by a long solo homer to right from first-year
Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) that made it a 13-11 game.

Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) came on for the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sophomore
Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) earned the win for the Engineers to move to 2-0 on the season as he threw three hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Matt Campo took the loss for the Kingsmen to fall to 0-1 overall.

- MIT outhit Cal Lutheran by a 14-9 margin as Schoenfeld, Anderson and Finch each posted three hits on the day. Carillo led the way for Cal Lutheran as he had two hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in.
