The Lead: In its spring debut, the MIT men's lightweight crew team captured Secretary of the Navy Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic this past weekend. The Engineers finished first in the Sharp Memorial Cup Petite Final, second in the Men's Collegiate 3V8+ Final, and fourth in the Cal Cup.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Cal Cup (V8+):
- Facing heavyweight crews, MIT finished third in its heat on Saturday. The Engineers had a strong start and were in second place but Bates slowly moved through them throughout the race, gaining the upper hand around the 1,000-meter mark. During the third 500, MIT held off a move from UC Santa Barbara and ended up finishing solidly in third place with a time of 6:35.200.
- The Engineers battled through a tough race on Sunday, however, they moved steadily on the boats in the fifth and sixth slots. MIT finished fourth, just three seconds behind Marietta and five seconds ahead of Orange Coast and UC Santa Barbara.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Sharp Memorial Cup (2V8+):
- MIT had a tough start in Saturday's heat but rallied and moved on the field through the middle of the race. The Engineers briefly had a chance to slide into third or second place, but they couldn't keep up with the sprints by Gonzaga and San Diego. MIT ended up finishing fourth in 6:43.955, just 1.445 seconds behind San Diego and 3.079 seconds after Gonzaga.
- Despite a close start in the Petite Final on Sunday, the Engineers used a strong middle 1,000 meters to pull away and maintain their lead after losing a seat late in the race. MIT won the race in 6:41.156, just over four seconds ahead of UCLA.
