The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 7 Tufts University generated 10 unanswered goals before going on to defeat MIT, 22-3, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Junior
Delaney Goetz (Rockville, Md.) paced the Engineers with one goal and one assist. The Jumbos' balanced attack, which featured 16 players recording at least one point, was highlighted by hat tricks from
Margie Carden and
Caroline Walter.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Tufts saw seven different players find the back of the net as it built a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
- The Jumbos increased their advantage to 10-0 during the first three minutes of the second stanza. Carden and
Anna Clarke both buried free-position shots for their second goals of the night while
Becca Gable added an unassisted marker. Sophomore
Nora Donnelly (Ridgewood, N.J.) ended the shutout at the 11:33 mark but Tufts tacked on four more goals, including back-to-back strikes by Walter. MIT made the score 14-2 after junior
Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) connected on a feed from Goetz with 16 seconds remaining while being down a player.
- In the third quarter,
Genna Gibbons and
Ella Lesperance recorded their first goals of the night as Carden completed the hat trick with 2:29 remaining.
- During the first minute of the fourth quarter,
Kathryn Fernandopulle generated a turnover, collected the groundball, and sprinted to the net for her first intercollegiate goal as the visitors' lead grew to 18-2. Goetz ended the Engineers' scoring drought with 12:30 on the clock, however, the Jumbos closed out the game with goals by Lesperance,
Lucy Hodge,
Kate Mastrobuono, and
Caroline Cromwell.
