Baseball Picks Up Sunday Doubleheader Sweep of Clark

THE BASICS:
 
- Records: MIT (7-12-1, 2-3 NEWMAC); Clark University (10-8, 1-4 NEWMAC)
 
- Scores: Game One: MIT 12, Clark University 1; Game Two: MIT 14, Clark University 8
 
- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Archie Allen Field)
 
- The Lead: In a NEWMAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the MIT baseball team swept Clark University by scores of 12-1 and 14-8.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
 
- The Engineers jumped on top with a six-run third inning behind a two-RBI single from sophomore Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) and a three-run homer to right from first-year Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.). After a single run in the fourth, Soqui homered again in the fifth to go along with two-RBI singles by Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.).
 
- Clark scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to account for the 12-1 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) led the Engineers with a 3-for-5 outing, while Soqui finished the game with two hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in. Carter Doran led Clark with two hits as MIT outhit the Cougars by a 13-4 margin.
 
- Junior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) earned the win for MIT to move to 2-2 as he threw six scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Benjamin Spencer took the loss for Clark as he allowed seven runs in four innings to fall to 3-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
 
- In the second game, MIT staked to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second behind a two-RBI single to left from Schoenfeld. After a single Clark run in the bottom of the frame, the Engineers scored two in the third and another in the fourth for the 6-1 lead.
 
- The Cougars cut the lead down to 6-5 in the fifth with a four-run inning. Chris Radovic started the scoring with an RBI single to center, followed by bases-loaded walk by Billy Sullivan and a two-RBI single to left from Ethan Belt.
 
- Each team scored three times in the sixth to make it a 9-8 score heading into the seventh. The Engineers scored a pair in the eighth and three in the ninth behind a two-RBI single center from Finch. The final run came on an RBI infield single by Soqui in the 14-8 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- The top six batters in the MIT lineup all registered multiple hits, including three each from Schoenfield and Finch. The Engineers outhit Clark by a 17-4 margin and also drew four walks.
 
- Junior Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win to move 1-0 on the season after first-year Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) allowed one run in four innings. Sophomore Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned the save for the Engineers as he threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
 
- For Clark, Max Moss went five innings and allowed seven hits and six runs in five innings.

- MIT is back in action on Tuesday, April 12th as the Engineers host Springfield College for a 3:30 p.m. start at Fran O'Brien Field.
