The Lead: Racing in deteriorating conditions in the Biglin Bowl on the Charles River, the MIT men's lightweight Second Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+ both finished in second place on Saturday. Meanwhile, the nationally-ranked No. 11 Varsity 8+ was third, behind No. 9 Dartmouth and No. 8 Harvard.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT was up on Harvard during the first 300-400 meters of V8+ race but the Crimson gradually pulled away. The Engineers found their rhythm during the second 1,000 meters; however, they couldn't overcome Harvard's lead. Dartmouth finished first (6:30.7), followed by the Crimson (6:36.4), and MIT (6:44.4).
- Harvard controlled the 2V8+ race, but the Engineers stayed close for most of the event despite the rough conditions. MIT slowly moved on Dartmouth throughout the race, claiming second place in 6:53.8, just six seconds behind Harvard and seven seconds ahead of the Big Green.
- In the 3V8+ race, Harvard withstood the significant decline in weather to win the event in 7:38.0. The Engineers performed well enough to stay ahead of Dartmouth in the first 1,000 meters and then eventually opened up the margin once conditions improved during the second 1,000 meters. The Engineers crossed the finish line in 8:07.2, a comfortable 7.3 seconds ahead of the Big Green.
