- The Lead: In the NEWMAC opener on Saturday afternoon, the MIT dropped a doubleheader to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with final scores of 13- and 8-3 at Fran O'Brien Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:

- Coast Guard jumped on top early as the Bears got three runs in the first, led by a two-RBI single to left from
John Carroll. The Engineers countered in the second with two runs to cut the margin to one run as senior
Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.) scored on a passed ball and senior
Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) came home on a wild pitch.

- The game headed into the seventh at 5-3 in favor of Coast Guard before the two teams erupted for nine runs in the frame. For the visitors, Carroll launched a solo homer to start the inning and that was followed up by a two-run shot from
Justin Stasiak to key a four-run frame and the 9-3 lead.

- In the bottom of the seventh, first-year
Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) cranked a three-run homer to right that cut the lead to 9-6, followed by a two-run home run from junior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) that made it a 9-8 margin. Soqui posted an RBI double to left center in the eighth to add to his day, but the Bears outscored the Engineers 4-1 over the final three innings in the 13-9 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Soqui, Aiello and
Kyle Sonandres each went 2-for-4 at the plate as Soqui finished with four RBI and O'Shea reached with three walks. For the Bears, eight players registered multiple hits as Coast Guard outhit MIT 20-11 in the game.

- Junior
Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) took the loss for MIT to fall to 1-2 as he had the start and allowed five runs over three innings with six strikeouts. Overall, MIT's pitchers had a season-high 16 strikeouts as a staff.
Brock Soletti improved to 3-0 with the win as he threw 2.2 innings in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:

- Coast Guard opened the game strong and scored in five of the first six innings to jump out to the 8-0 lead.
Cody Fidler had a two-RBI single in the left in the second, along with a solo homer from catcher
Greg Boland in the fourth to lead the offense.

- MIT pushed across three runs in the eighth to make it an 8-3 game, including a Soqui run that crossed on an RBI single to right by junior
Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sophomore
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and junior
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) each had two hits in game two, while Nate Nam, Fidler, Boland and
Jack Steel posted two hits each for Coast Guard.

Charles Red was excellent for Coast Guard on the mound as he was the winning pitcher and moved to 1-2 with 5.2 innings of scoreless play. Senior
Adam Katz (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) took the loss falls to 0-3 on the season as he threw two innings in the start.
