Baseball Drops 17-5 Final at Springfield on Tuesday

THE BASICS:
 
- Records: MIT (5-12-1, 0-3 NEWMAC); Springfield College (8-13, 1-2 NEWMAC)
 
- Scores: Springfield College 17, MIT 5

- The Lead: On Tuesday afternoon, the MIT baseball team dropped a 17-5 final to Springfield College as the NEWMAC contest was called after seven innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- MIT got on the board in the top of the third as junior Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) scored to level the game at 1-1 after he reached on a leadoff double to right field. Sonandres keyed a four-run sixth inning as well as his three-run homer to left center scored sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) to make it a 7-5 game in favor of the Pride.
 
- The Pride extended the lead in the sixth and seventh innings before earning the win in the first of two meetings between the teams this season.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Sonandres went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead MIT as he finished with two runs scored and three runs batted in. For the Pride, six players registered multiple hits as Ryan Sorgi led the way with a 3-for-5 outing with four runs scored and two RBI.
 
- First-year Ajinkya Gundaria (Alpharetta, Ga.) is now 0-1 on the season as he took the loss in relief, while Michael White moves to 1-1 with four innings of one-run pitching in the start.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT's next game on Wednesday vs. Tufts has been postponed due to incoming rain and will now take place in Cambridge on April 20th. The Engineers will now be back in action on Saturday, April 9th for a doubleheader that is an 11 a.m. start at Clark University.
