Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 3 Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Babson, 13-10, in NEWMAC Semifinals

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 2 Babson College 13, No. 3 MIT 10

- Records: MIT (12-5); Babson (13-5)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (MacDowell Field)

- The Lead: No. 2 seed Babson College generated five unanswered goals in the second quarter as it held on to defeat No. 3 MIT, 13-10, in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday night. Sophomore Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) paced the Engineers with four goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Babson inched out to a 2-0 lead but an unassisted goal from Arterburn put MIT on the board midway through the first quarter. The Beavers scored off the ensuing draw, however, junior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored and set up classmate Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) for the equalizer with 3:22 on the clock. In less than a minute, the Beavers found the back of the net and took a 4-3 edge.

- In the second stanza, the hosts put together their pivotal five-goal run and entered halftime with a 9-3 advantage.

- A solo effort by senior Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) ended the Engineers' scoring drought after 3:29 expired in the third quarter. Babson posted back-to-back goals which were matched by first-year Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Arterburn as Pyon's tally was a player-up goal. The Beavers replied with another two-goal burst, moving the score to 13-6 with 2:40 on the clock. Arterburn completed the hat trick when she buried a free-position shot moments after the draw.

- Gambino found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter but a defensive battle ensued until she converted a free-position attempt at the 6:15 mark. Arterburn accounted for the final goal of the night when she scored a free-position goal with 4:40 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Junior Emma Tauckus (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied four draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers as Pyon added three draw controls and a caused turnover. Senior Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) posted two caused turnovers and two groundballs while classmate Elena Boal (West Windsor, N.J.) made six saves.

- Prior to the loss, the Engineers had won nine games in a row and went undefeated during the month of April.
