- The Lead: On day two of the 2022 NEWMAC Baseball Championship, the No. 5 seeded MIT baseball team dropped a 7-2 final to top-seeded Wheaton College on Friday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. With the loss, the Engineers now face a must-win game on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The hosts took a 2-0 first-inning lead as
AJ Guindon scored on an RBI single from
Jake Studley, followed by a fielder's choice that scored
Mike Maher. Wheaton added three more runs in the bottom of the second behind three hits that featured an RBI single down the right field line that from
Zach DeMattio that made it a 5-0 margin.

- The score remained that way until there were two outs in the bottom of the four, where
Cavan Brady laced a two-RBI double down the left field line to plate Studley and Guindon and grow the lead to 7-0.

- With one out in the sixth, first-year
Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) crushed a mammoth home run to right center to get the Engineers on the board. His team-best eighth homer of the season cut the lead to 7-1. MIT closed out the scoring in the eighth as sophomore
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) led off the inning with a double to left center and later scored on an RBI groundout by junior
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) for the 7-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT was outhit 8-6 by Wheaton despite a 3-for-4 afternoon from Schoenfeld. For Wheaton, three players finished with two hits that included a 2-for-3 outing with two runs scored by Guindon.

- On the mound, senior
Casey Bussone (Danvers, Mass.) took the loss as he allowed five runs and two hits and is now 2-3 on the season.
Stephen Quigley picked up the win for the Lyons with eight innings of two-run ball with eight strikeouts, along with a perfect ninth by
Zach Clesas.

- MIT continues the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Saturday, May 7th as the Engineers take on No. 2 seeded Springfield College in a Noon start at Sidell Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 9:30 a.m., but has been pushed back due to expected rain in the area.
