The Lead: Two goals late in the third quarter broke a tie as the nationally-ranked No. 20 MIT field hockey team went on to defeat Montclair State University, 3-1, on Thursday night. Sophomore
Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) produced one goal and one assist for the Engineers while
Tori Sutera recorded the lone marker for the Red Hawks.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT nearly got on the board after 32 seconds elapsed when it was awarded a penalty stroke; however,
Lauren Pickul made a diving save at the near post on senior
Laura Schwendeman's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) shot. The Engineers controlled the action for most of the frame and eventually broke through when Lederman redirected a feed from Schwendeman on a penalty corner in the eighth minute. Montclair State countered with a pair of penalty corners and two shots, including one that was saved by sophomore
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.), during the last six minutes of the quarter
Â
- The Red Hawks carried the momentum into the second stanza and registered advantages in shots (6-3) and penalty corners (2-1). The visitors knotted the game with 52 seconds remaining in the half when Sutera corralled a throughball in the arc and knocked it to the near post.
Â
- Montclair State almost claimed the lead twice in the third quarter. The Red Hawks' first attempt was stopped by Duncan while an apparent goal was waved off as the ball did not leave the arc during a penalty corner. MIT replied in the 42
nd minute as sophomore
Faith Choe (San Diego, Calif.) sent a blast from the near side which deflected off a defender's stick and gave the hosts a 2-1 edge. Following five penalty corners and four shots, the Engineers created some breathing room as first-year
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) connected on feeds from Lederman and Schwendeman on a penalty corner with 2:25 left in the frame.
Â
- Although the fourth quarter was scoreless, MIT had the upper hand in shots (6-0) and penalty corners (4-0).
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Pickul finished with seven saves while Duncan collected five in her first intercollegiate start in goal.
Â
- The Engineers ended the night with advantages in shots (24-10), shots on goal (10-6), and penalty corners (18-6).
Â
- This was the second meeting between both programs. The first occurred on September 1, 2019 at Montclair State. The then nationally-ranked No. 13 Red Hawks generated a 4-0 victory over MIT.
Â
- This was the 13
th year in a row the Engineers have won their home opener.
Â
UP NEXT:
