The Lead: Reegan McCluskey scored with four minutes left in the first quarter and nationally-ranked No. 4 Tufts University withstood No. 16 MIT's furious second-half attack to hold on for a 1-0 win in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Following its third penalty corner of the opening quarter, McCluskey dribbled to her right and then unleashed a shot from the near side to the far post to give Tufts the lead.
Â
- In the second quarter, both teams generated four shots while MIT had a 3-1 edge in penalty corners. During the Engineers' first penalty corner of the night, Jumbos goalie
Sam Gibby kicked away back-to-back shots by first-year
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) and sophomore
Eva Oppenheim (Larkspur, Calif.).
Â
- MIT maintained possession for most of the second half as it had advantages in shots (6-0), shots on goal (4-0) and penalty corners (6-0) but Tufts maintained the shutout. The Jumbos almost extended their lead in the 51
st minute as
Meghan MacDonald tried to chase down a loose ball in the arc for a potential one-on-one situation but senior goalie
Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) kicked the ball away.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Smiga-McManus finished with two saves while Gibby turned away seven shots.
Â
- MIT ended the night with advantages in shots (10-8), shots on goal (7-3), and penalty corners (9-5).
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
- Both teams travel to conference foes on Saturday, Sept. 17. MIT will visit NEWMAC rival for a 1:00 p.m. game while Tufts will take the field at No. 11 Amherst College an hour earlier for a NESCAC tilt.
