Desmarais Records Win 200 as Women's Soccer Topples RWU, 6-1

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 6, Roger Williams - 1

- Records: No. 22 MIT (5-1-1), Roger Williams (2-3-0)

- Location: Bristol, R.I. (Bayside Field)

- The Lead: Head coach Martin Desmarais recorded his 200th career victory as the No. 22 MIT women's soccer team took care of Roger Williams, 6-1, on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers scored three goals in six minutes including two just under a minute apart to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

- Sophomore Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) opened the scoring for MIT as she took a pass from sophomore Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) and buried the shot in the back of the net for the goal at 21:19. English then got herself in the scoring column with a goal at 26:47.

- First-year Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.) sent a pass into junior Lexi Spinetta (Austin, Texas) who recorded her first goal of the season at 27:59. Luk later made it a 4-0 game at 32:08 with her third goal of the year.

- With a minute remaining in the half first-year Alice Vranka (Bronxville, N.Y.) put MIT up by five with her first collegiate score.

- Just 17 seconds into the start of the second half Sedwick took a pass from graduate student Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.)  and put the Engineers up by six.

- The Hawks got on the board at 77:37 on a score from Bianca Robbins.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Desmarais now has 200 wins as head coach of MIT.

- The six goals are the most in a game so far this season for MIT and are the most since the Engineers scored six against Springfield in the NEWMAC Tournament Final last season.

- Groff now has nine points on the season while Luk has seven.

- The Engineers outshot RWU 34-1 and put 13 shots on goal. MIT also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

- Three different Engineers saw time in net. Senior Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned the win as she played the first half. Junior Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) and first-year Ava Muffoletto (Kings Park, N.Y.) combined to finish the game.

UP NEXT:

- MIT opens up NEWMAC play this weekend as the Engineers will welcome Clark University to Roberts Field on Saturday, September 17. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
