MIT Sailing teams after the Regis and Hatch Brown Regatta

Sailing Finishes Fourth at Hatch Brown; Post Many Other Strong Performances Over the Weekend

The Lead: The MIT sailing team competed in four regattas over with weekend with many sailors getting valuable and successful time out in the water. The team earned a fourth-place finish at the Hatch Brown Trophy against some of the top coed teams in the region.
 
THE HATCH BROWN TROPHY | Cambridge, Mass. | 4th of 18 (183 points)
 
- MIT finished fourth overall out of 18 teams as the Engineers totaled 183 points, coming in 10 points behind Harvard for third.
 
- The Engineers won two events and finished in the top-five 15 times with back-to-back fourth-place finishes to wrap up the regatta.
 
- In the A Division, the MIT team of junior Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) and graduate student Maaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) finished third with 46 points.
 
- The B Division saw graduate student Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.) and senior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.) finish fifth with 70 points after a head-to-head tiebreaker with Bowdoin, and sophomore Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) and senior Abby VanLonkhuyzen (Yarmouth, Maine) steered the MIT boat to a sixth-place finish in the C Division with 67 points.

 REGIS TROPHY | Boston, Mass. | 13th of 18 (218 points)
 
- In the A Division, MIT scored 82 points with sophomores Lucy Brock (Austin, Texas) at skipper and Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) as the crew.
 
- First-year Brooke Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) was the skipper and gained solid experience in her first away regatta, and junior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) was the crew in the B Division and scored 136 points during their races.

NEISA WOMEN'S SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP | Providence, R.I. | 8th and 9th of 10

- In the small but highly competitive fleet race, senior Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) finished eighth with 74 points and three top-five finishes.
 
- Sophomore Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) finished one point before her teammate in ninth and had two top-five finishes.
 
NEISA SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP | Providence, R.I. |

- First-year Alex Horne (Broomfield, Colo.) impressed with an eighth-place finish with 120 points and two top-five finishes.
 
- Junior Matthew Elliot (Waterford, Mich.) finished 20th with 221 points.

- It will be another busy weekend on the water for the Engineers with five regattas on the schedule including the MIT Dinghy Invite.
