Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 14 MIT Overpowers Springfield, 5-0

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 14 MIT 5, Springfield College 0

- Records: No. 14 MIT (6-2, 2-0 NEWMAC); Springfield College (2-5, 0-2 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: A natural hat trick by senior Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) in a six-minute span during the second quarter propelled the nationally-ranked No. 14 MIT field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Springfield College in NEWMAC action on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT scored on its second penalty corner of the day after 2:05 expired. Sophomore Jordan Dattero (East Setauket, N.Y.) sent a pass to the front of the goal where it was tipped in by senior Liberty Ladd (Falmouth, Maine). The Engineers controlled the action as they generated five shots (three on goal) and two penalty corners during the next 10 minutes. Springfield was awarded a penalty corner with 27 seconds remaining, however, the ensuing shot by Nicolette Morlock was blocked.

- Forester increased MIT's lead in the 19th minute after she made her way through Springfield's defense and flicked the ball past goalie Remy Niland. Almost five minutes later, Forester made a similar run to goal before quickly completing the hat trick in the 25th minute.

- First-year Marissa Liu (Chesterfield, Mo.) made the score 5-0 just under four minutes into the third quarter when she collected the rebound of a deflection and lifted the ball over Niland.

- The fourth quarter was a balanced affair as both teams were awarded two penalty corners while the Pride had a 2-1 edge in shots. Springfield almost ended the shutout twice in the frame but sophomore goalie Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) made a save in the 54th minute as senior Laura Schwendeman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came up with a defensive save with 33 seconds left to play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) played the first half but did not face any shots on goal as Duncan closed out the game with a save.

- Niland produced nine saves for the Pride.

- The Engineers led the way in shots (16-3), shots on goal (14-2), and penalty corners (12-3).
