The Lead: A pair of goals in the second half by senior
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) lifted the nationally-ranked No. 12 MIT field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over New England College on Wednesday night. On the defensive end, the Engineers conceded one shot as they recorded their second straight shutout and fourth of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT dominated the action during the first half as it generated a 14-0 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in shots on goal while also earning five penalty corners. The Engineers almost got on the board twice during the second quarter. Early in the frame, NEC goalie
Jackie Mountford kicked out a dangerous through-ball that skimmed across the front of the goal and then she made a stick-save on the line on a shot by Forester.
Â
- MIT ended the stalemate 3:47 into the third quarter when sophomore
Eva Oppenheim (Larkspur, Calif.) backhanded a pass from the near post to Forester who redirected it from right in front of the goal. The Pilgrims threatened to record the equalizer in the 39
th minute when
Drea Chin sent a cross through traffic but the visitors weren't able to put a stick on it.
Â
- The Engineers continued to press in the fourth quarter, eventually increasing their lead to 2-0 with 6:13 left to play. Following MIT's sixth penalty corner of the frame, first-year
Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) passed the ball from the near side of the arc and it was corralled by Forester at the far post who then flipped it past Mountford.
Â
- With 14 seconds remaining, NEC generated its best attempt to end the shutout. On its second penalty corner of the night,
Giuliana Kevlin sent a blast from the near side that was cleared away by sophomore goalie
Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.).
Â
