The Lead: Brianne McGrath scored in the 18
th minute as No. 10 Babson College held off No. 12 MIT for a 1-0 victory in NEWMAC field hockey action on Friday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Although Babson earned a pair of penalty corners late in the first quarter, it was MIT that produced the first shot which occurred with 2:38 left in the frame. First-year
Marissa Liu (Chesterfield, Mo.) found herself in front of the cage but her attempt bounced off the crossbar.
Â
- Following the Beavers' second penalty corner of the second stanza,
Meara Hanyon collected the ball just beyond the top of the arc and found McGrath on the near side. McGrath then unleashed a blast that made its way through traffic and banged off the far post and into the cage. Babson almost increased its lead in the 20
th minute but senior
Laura Schwendeman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made a defensive save on a shot by
Sanne van der Goes.
Â
- The Engineers controlled the action during the first six minutes of the third quarter as they generated five shots (three on goal including a defensive save by Hanyon) and three penalty corners. During the next two minutes, the Beavers received a pair of penalty corners and
Andrea Marguerite put a high shot on goal, but senior goalie
Kiely Smiga-McManus (Etna, N.H.) used her stick to knock down the ball. MIT responded with four shots (one on goal) and three penalty corners during a two-minute span while Babson produced two shots (one on goal) and a penalty corner inside the final 26 seconds of the frame.
Â
- The fourth quarter yielded fewer scoring opportunities for both teams. Marguerite put a shot on goal in the 51
st minute and the Beavers were awarded the lone penalty corner of the period in the 52
nd minute. The Engineers, meanwhile, saw senior
Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) record their only shot which occurred with 1:36 left to play.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Smiga-McManus finished with five saves while
Bayla Furmanek made four for Babson.
Â
- MIT had the upper hand in shots (12-8) but the Beavers ended the night with advantages in shots on goal (7-5) and penalty corners (10-6).
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
- Both teams will be continuing conference play in Worcester on Tuesday, Oct. 4. MIT will visit Clark University for a 7:00 p.m. game while Babson will take the field at WPI at 4:00 p.m.
