Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT staked to an 11-2 lead over the opening 7:16 behind a pair of baskets by first-year
Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.). The Engineers extended their advantage to double digits at 19-9 on a Delgado-Gonzalez three-pointer before eventually leading by as many as 17 points at 32-15. Another Delgado-Gonzalez layup with 32 seconds remaining before halftime made it a 35-19 margin at the half as the first-year finished the half with a game-high 18 points.
Â
- The hosts continued to lead by double digits at 40-30 over the first 7:25 of the second half before the Beavers chipped away at the MIT lead. A layup by
Timmy O'Toole pulled Babson to within three at 42-39 and eventually to within two following a jumper from
Aaron Gao.
Â
- The Beavers tied the game for the first time since the opening minutes after two free throws by
Andrew Kirkpatrick made it 47-47. The teams traded baskets before an O'Toole layup with just 56 seconds left put Babson in front for the first time at 51-49. Just 13 seconds later, Delgado-Gonzalez nailed a pair of free throws to tie the game for a fourth time, followed by two missed Babson threes by
David Cross and
Ryan Cibull as the game headed to overtime.
Â
- In overtime, it was all Beavers as Cross drilled a three to put Babson in front for good at 54-51 as the visitors started the extra period on an 8-0 run. MIT sophomore
Kade Killeen (Austin, Texas) hit a free throw to end the spurt before the visitors finished out the game and the 62-52 final.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Delgado-Gonzalez played all 45 minutes and finished with 30 points and six rebounds, along with 10-for-15 shooting from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore
