The Lead: Trailing by 17 points with 7:09 left in the third quarter, MIT battled back to capture a 70-66 come-from-behind victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 17 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and three assists for the Engineers.
Farrah Peterein came off the bench to pace the Bears with 14 points as she shot 5-of-6 on the night, including a 4-of-5 performance from three-point range.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- MIT built a small lead in the first quarter which moved to 17-12 after a three-pointer by sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) with 36 seconds remaining. However, Coast Guard closed out the frame with a trey from
Jacqueline Ward.
Â
- A layup just 37 seconds into the second quarter gave the Engineers some breathing room, but the Bears capitalized on a three-point play by
Glory Blethen and a layup from
Julia Mann to go in front 20-19. Nwogu quickly produced her own three-point play, however, Coast Guard took a 23-22 edge after a three-pointer by Peterein. A jumper by first year
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) put MIT ahead with under six minutes remaining. The Bears responded with back-to-back buckets by
Dorothy Stotts, sparking a 19-3 run which resulted in a 42-27 advantage at halftime.
Â
- Coast Guard's margin reached 17 points twice during the third quarter, the last at 46-29 after two free throws by Ward with 7:09 on the clock. Following almost two minutes of scoreless play, a jumper by graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) helped MIT start to chip away at the deficit as a three-point play by sophomore
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) brought the hosts within 54-46 at the end of the period.
Â
- The Engineers continued to attack as Nwogu's layup narrowed the gap to 56-53 at the 7:24 mark. Following an exchange of possessions, the Bears generated an 8-2 spurt which created a nine-point lead (64-55) with 5:18 on the clock. Stotts recorded a three-pointer and then a layup while Peterein knocked down another trifecta.
Â
- MIT quickly replied with a layup by Hall, sparking a 15-2 game-ending run. During the last two minutes of regulation, Hall's layup evened the score at 64 but a steal by Blethen set up a go-ahead layup by Mann with 1:08 to go. Hall sank another layup 10 seconds later and after a missed jumper by Coast Guard, Pieper knocked down a jumper with 35 seconds on the clock. Following a missed basket by the visitors, Choi secured the victory with two free throws with seven seconds left to play.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Choi finished with 16 points and four assists while sophomore
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) posted 13 points. Hall recorded the first double-double of her career on 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Pieper dished out a game-high six assists for the Engineers.
