The Lead: MIT outscored Wheaton College, 21-5, in the first quarter and never looked back as it recorded a 67-49 victory in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) paced the Engineers with a game-high 18 points to go along with three steals while
Regan Keyter led the Lyons with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Following a layup by Keyter at the 7:24 mark, two free throws by sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) sparked a 16-1 run that resulted in a 21-5 advantage for the hosts at the end of the opening frame.
Â
- MIT maintained its comfortable cushion as its lead grew to 22 (38-16) courtesy of Nwogu's put-back with 1:31 left.
Riley Sprague quickly knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 38-19 at halftime.
Â
- The third quarter was a balanced affair until back-to-back Keyter buckets and a trey from
Greta Minos narrowed the gap to 49-36 with 35 seconds remaining. The Engineers countered with a three-pointer by Choi 24 seconds later.
Â
- A jumper by first year
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, however, Wheaton capitalized on Keyter's jumper and a three-pointer play by
Nasha Arnold to once again come within 13 (54-41) at the 7:36 mark. Two free throws by graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) on MIT's next possession kicked off a 7-2 burst. An exchange of baskets followed until
Kiki Walters' free throw brought the Lyons within 63-49 with 2:55 left. The Engineers closed out the game with a pair of free throws by Nwogu and first year
Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.).
