The Lead: The MIT women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four after holding off Springfield College for a 61-58 victory in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) powered the Engineers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, for her third straight double-double and fourth in five games.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A layup by Nwogu kicked off a string of nine unanswered points, giving MIT a 13-2 advantage with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. Springfield countered with an 11-3 run, however, a put-back by sophomore
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) created an 18-13 lead for the Engineers at the end of the frame.
Â
- A jumper by first year
Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) 35 seconds into the second stanza increased MIT's cushion. However, the Pride put together an 11-2 run which resulted in a 24-22 lead with 4:36 on the clock. Layups by Nwogu and graduate student
Anna Broski (Stillman Valley, Ill.) put the Engineers back in front a minute later. On Springfield's next possession, the hosts drained a layup which set off an exchange of baskets until sophomore
Angie Choi's (Cypress, Calif.) jumper moved the score to 32-28 with just over a minute left in half.
Â
- The Pride outscored MIT, 7-2, resulting in a 35-34 lead midway through the third quarter. The Engineers went ahead courtesy of two free throws by graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) at the 4:45 mark, sparking a 15-5 run which created a 49-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
- MIT carried the momentum into the final frame as its margin grew to 57-43 following a layup from Nwogu with 5:50 on the clock. Despite the deficit Springfield continued to attack, closing the gap to 61-58 with 20 seconds remaining. After a trio of fouls by the Pride, the Engineers turned the ball over with 12 seconds to go. However, coming out of its own timeout, Springfield generated a turnover with 2.5 seconds left. MIT successfully inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to secure the win.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Pieper produced 11 points and seven assists while Choi tallied 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. First year
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and four blocks.
Â
- The Engineers led the way in points off turnovers (11-7) and points in the paint (34-26) while the Pride ended the night with advantages in rebounds (51-43), second-chance points (13-12), and bench scoring (20-8).
