Seattle, Wash. (January 27) -- MIT baseball pitching coach/recruiting coordinator
Todd Carroll has been named as the pitching coach for the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Mariners, a minor league affiliate of the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB) that is located in Peoria, Arizona.
Â
"The past 12 years at MIT have been extremely rewarding and I'm grateful to Coach Barlow for the opportunity and room to grow he gave me," said Carroll. "The relationships with student-athletes and colleagues have been special and will last a lifetime. As I shared with the team, I've learned more than I've taught and it's been a privilege to work with student-athletes so driven in everything they do. I look forward to staying in touch with current and former players and becoming MIT Baseball's biggest fan."
Â
Carroll has served as the MIT pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for 12 seasons after joining the Engineers in 2010. During his time at MIT, the Engineers have put together one of the most consistent pitching staffs in the region and nationally, capturing three NEWMAC Championships and advancing to five NCAA Regionals. In 2013-14, the MIT pitching staff finished among the top-20 in earned run average, strikeout-to-walk ratio, WHIP and walks allowed per nine innings. In 2015, Carroll was honored with the Kevin Burr Assistant Coach Award by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) as the Engineers posted a program-record 29 wins and captured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship.
Â
"It is nearly impossible to sum up the contributions and impact that Coach Carroll has had on the MIT Baseball program over the past 13 years," said
Andy Barlow, MIT baseball head coach. "As recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, and with his larger-than-life personality, the "rhino" has impacted the development, both on and off the field, of so many MIT student-athletes. While all associated with the program will surely miss Coach Carroll, we are also very proud and excited for him as he pursues this amazing opportunity in pro ball with the Mariners."
Â
In 2017, pitcher David Hesslink graduated as the program's all-time leader in victories and was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the MLB Draft. In 2019, Patrick Callahan earned a spot in the NEIBA Senior All-Star Game after pitching the Engineers to the NEWMAC Championship and the NCAA Tournament with a pair of dominant, complete-game victories.
Â
Prior to MIT, Carroll's other collegiate coaching experience includes UMass Boston, Salem Community College and Harvard University. He has also coached in three of the top collegiate baseball summer leagues in the country with the Mill City All-Americans of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) and the Bennington Bombers of the New York Collegiate League (NYCL).
