Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 20 Field Hockey Blanks Clark, 5-0, for Eighth Straight Win

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 20 MIT 5, Clark University 0

- Records: No. 20 MIT (10-3, 6-0 NEWMAC); Clark (4-9, 1-5 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: Following a scoreless first quarter, No. 20 MIT broke through with two goals in the second stanza en route to a 5-0 victory over Clark University in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday. Graduate student Paige Forester (Glencoe, Ill.) powered the Engineers with one goal and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the opening frame, Alexandra Cacciapaglia made a pair of saves and Clark received back-to-back penalty corners. During the Cougars' second attempt, first year goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) stopped Ciaran Cubbage's shot.

- MIT ended the stalemate just 2:14 into the second quarter when graduate student Liberty Ladd (Cornelia, Ga.) redirected a feed at the near post which came from Forester at the far post. On the Engineers' second penalty corner of the game, Forester, from the near post, lifted the ball towards the far post and it was batted in by junior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) in the 24th minute.

- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outshot Clark, 7-1. The hosts increased their advantage to 3-0 just over eight minutes into the period. During a penalty corner, first year Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) passed the ball to Forester, who with her back to the cage, flipped it to the far post. In a span of 35 seconds, the Engineers tacked on another goal. Oppenheim's initial shot was saved at the near post but first year Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) lobbed the loose ball into the top left corner of the cage.

- The Engineers capped the scoring 1:30 into the fourth quarter. From just inside the arc, junior Faith Choe (San Diego, Calif.) connected with first year Sammi Blocher (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) after she ran behind a defender toward the far post and quickly hit the ball past Cacciapaglia.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Zimmer made two saves in the first half as junior Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) and first year Adowyn Byrne (Essex, Vt.) split the second half and were not forced to make a save. The trio combined for MIT's sixth shutout of the season.

- Cacciapaglia ended the day with seven saves while Jenna Beauchain recorded a defensive save for the Cougars.

- The Engineers led the way in shots (20-4), shots on goal (13-2), and penalty corners (8-5).
