No. 14 Engineers Take Down Springfield, 4-1

MIT now sits atop the NEWMAC standings with a 5-0 record

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT - 4, Springfield - 1
 
- Records: No. 14 MIT (9-1-1, 5-0 NEWMAC), Springfield (6-3-2, 4-1 NEWMAC)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)
 
- The Lead: In a match-up of two teams with unblemished 4-0 records in NEWMAC play, it was the No. 14 MIT women's soccer team that came out with a 5-0 record as the Engineers defeated Springfield, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) gave MIT a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she got past the Pride defense and buried her shot into the back of the goal.
 
- Junior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) put the hosts up 2-0 as she got a pass from junior Lauren Davis (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and raced past the Springfield defense. She then fired a shot that tipped off the goalkeeper's fingers and into the back of the net at 22:01.
 
- First year Katherine Ruan (Naperville, Ill.) took a long pass from first year Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) down the sideline and tucked the ball into the corner of the goal to make it 3-0 Engineers.
 
- A header by Davis off a corner kick by senior Victoria Ganeles (Armonk, N.Y.) at 44:24 sent MIT into the break with a 4-0 lead.
 
- The Pride got on the board late in the game when a corner kick from Julianna DaCosta found the foot of Kaitlyn Suller for the score at 78:12.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Engineers held a commanding advantage in shots (23-4) and shots-on-goal (10-3). MIT also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
 
- Barnouw leads the team with six goals and is second with 14 points. Rowlett netted her fifth goal and leads the team with 15 points.
 
- Davis now has two goals and an assist on the year while Ruan scored her third goal of the season.
 
- Ganeles recorded her first assist of the year and Doss secured her second assist of the season.
 
- Senior Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) improved to 7-1-1 on the season with two saves in the match.
