- The Lead: The No. 14 MIT women's soccer team used two second-half goals to defeat the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Dolphins controlled the offensive tempo early in the match before the Engineer offense got to work in the CMSV zone.
- Junior
Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) sent a looping pass from midfield down to senior
Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) who fought through her defenders and turned and fired a shot into the back of the net at 30:29.
- The Engineers had two late scoring chances in the half as a shot from sophomore
Alice Vranka (Bronxville, N.Y.) was saved, and the shot from first-year
Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) sailed high.
- A minute and seven seconds into the second half,
Caitlyn Thompson tied the match when she collected a loose ball in front and put a shot into the back left corner.
- Off a scrum in the front of the net off a corner kick from junior
Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.), first-year
Katherine Ruan (Naperville, Ill.) collected the loose ball off a rebound off a shot from junior
Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.), and put the ball into the goal at 63:32 to give the lead back to MIT.
- Doss gave the Engineers an insurance goal later in the half as she ran past the Dolphins' defense, and rifled the shot into the back of the net and MIT went on to take the 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Rowlett recorded her 16th goal of the season while Ruan tallied her sixth, and Doss scored her fourth of the year.
- Sophomore
Ava Muffoletto (Kings Park, N.Y.) made two saves in goal to improve to 3-0 on the season.
- The Engineers held a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 10-3 advantage on shots-on-goal.
UP NEXT:
- The Engineers advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will take on Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, November 12th on Roberts Field.
