- The Lead: Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, the No. 14 MIT women's soccer team scored four unanswered goals to rally for the 4-1 win and a trip to the NCAA Third Round.
Senior
Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) scored twice in the second frame to help lead the Engineers to victory. Her 18 goals are tied for third most in a single season, and her 46 points are the second most in a single season in team history.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just 6:15 into the game,
Catriona Gould sent a cross to the front of the goal to
Julia McKenna whose shot found the back of the net to give the Huskies a quick 1-0 lead.
- The Engineers quickly looked to tie the match, taking 10 first-half shots with five on net, but
Breanna Atwood made all the saves to keep USM in the lead.
- Rowlett tied the match at 54:46 when junior
Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) flicked a pass to Rowlett who fired a shot into the back of the goal. Just a minute under later, a shot from junior
Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) bounced off the crossbar to a waiting Rowlett, and she wasted no time in placing the ball into the back of the cage to give MIT the lead.
- After a yellow card on the Huskies, sophomore
Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.) put the free kick into the back of the net to make it 3-1 MIT.
- Graduate student
Kaitlin Zareno (Los Angeles, Calif.) sealed the game at 78:25 as she raced past the Southern Maine defense and got her shot past Atwood to complete the thrilling come-from-behind win for MIT.
