Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls to Macalester, 92-72, in Non-Conference Tilt

THE BASICS:

- Score: Macalester College 92, MIT 72

- Records: MIT (1-3), Macalester (3-1)

- Location: Boston, Mass. (Boston University - Case Gymnasium)

- The Lead: Despite having four players in double figures for points, the MIT men's basketball team dropped a 92-72 decision to Macalester College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. Junior Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In a back-and-forth first half, a string of eight unanswered points gave MIT a 42-34 lead with 4:26 on the clock. However, sparked by a three-pointer, Macalester went on a 16-3 run to enter halftime with a 50-45 edge.

- Despite the score, the Engineers shot well out of the gate as they were 51 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the arc.

- During a span of 1:45 early in the second half, MIT put together a 7-1 run as a layup by first year Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) brought the Engineers within 55-52 at the 16:24 mark. After trading baskets, the Scots gradually pulled away before going on an 18-6 run during the final eight minutes of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- First-year Michael Zhang (Jacksonville, Fla.) poured in 18 points to lead MIT's quartet of double-digit scorers. Classmate Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) scored 16 points to extend his double-digit scoring streak to four straight games to start his collegiate career. Dobie established a new career-high with 13 points. He also chipped in with four rebounds and two steals.

- Macalester won the bench battle, 37-18, as the Engineers received just two points from the rest of the bench outside of Lin.

- The Scots also had 16 second-chance points to just three for MIT.

- The Engineers had the upper hand in fastbreak points (16-6) and points in the paint (30-26).

NEXT UP:

- MIT looks to get back on track when it hosts Tufts University on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Rockwell Cage.
