Men's Basketball Clipped By Tufts, 91-82, in Non-Conference Action

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: Tufts - 91, MIT - 82
 
- Records: MIT (1-4), Tufts (4-0)
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)
 
- The Lead: The MIT men's basketball team had three players score 15-plus points in the game, but it was not enough as the Engineers dropped a back-and-forth affair to Tufts in non-conference action, 91-82, on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- First-year Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) gave MIT a 15-9 lead with a layup at 16:10 in the first. Tufts then scored the next three to make it a 15-12 game, but MIT went on a 6-2 run with four points from first-year Will Bland (Virginia Beach, Va.) to go up 21-14.
 
- After a turnaround jumper from sophomore Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) gave MIT a 29-23 advantage with 7:25 left in the first, Tufts went on a 19-4 run to end the half with a 42-33 lead.
 
- First-year Michael Zhang (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a three to open the half and make it a 44-36 game, but the Jumbos continued to hold on to their lead. Another three from Zhang helped start a 17-8 run, and his three at 13:03 cut the Tufts lead to one at 56-55.
 
- A layup from first-year Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) gave MIT its first lead of the half, but Jon Medley converted a three-point play to put the Jumbos back in the lead at 59-58. Tufts continued to build its lead at the free-throw line, converting four straight to go up 63-58. Gogolin then hit two of his own to cut the lead to three,
 
- A three from Jay Dieterie put Tufts up 69-62, but Gogolin drilled a three to cut the lead to four. Tufts followed with a 5-0 run to take an 81-69 lead, and the Jumbos held on for the 91-82 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Zhang finished with 19 points while Gogolin finished with 15.
 
- Bland almost recorded a triple-double as he finished with 19 points, 8 rebounds and nine assists.
 
- The Jumbos had four players score at least 14 points. led by Scott Gyimesi with 18. Joshua Bernstein followed with 17 and Dieterie added 15 and Casey McLauren had 14. Bernstein and Gyimesi also had double-doubles as Bernstein grabbed 13 rebounds and Gyimesi added 11.
