CHAMPS! Women's Soccer Claims NEWMAC Championship with a 5-0 Win Over Babson

The Engineers Earned an Automatic Bid to the NCAA Tournament

THE BASICS:
Score: MIT - 5, Babson - 0

Records: No. 14 MIT (19-3-1), Babson (12-6-3)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: The No. 14 MIT women's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2023 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship with a 5-0 win over Babson on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers have claimed the program's seventh NEWMAC Championship and will be making the program's 12th tournament appearance.

Senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with two goals just minutes apart. Junior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) tapped the ball to Rowlett who quickly found senior Lexi Spinetta (Austin, Texas) in front of the goal for the score at 12:38. Junior Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Ill.) then fed classmate Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) for her eighth goal of the year at 13:35.

- Rowlett went top shelf for her 14th goal of the season at 17:06 as she got past the Babson defense and put the long shot over the head of Nora Ryan.

- English stole the ball from the Beavers at 53:11 and put the shot into the back of the net at 53:11 to make it a four-goal lead for MIT.

- Off a scrum in front of the goal of an Engineer corner, Rowlett collected the ball and recorded her 15th goal of the season at 81:35 to seal the title for the Engineers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- This marked only the fifth meeting between the teams in the tournament and the first since 2013. This was also MIT's first win over the Beavers in the tournament as they were previously 0-1-3.

- MIT outscored its opponents 17-1 in its three games in the tournament as the defense allowed just 13 shots on goal.

- Rowlett finished the day with two goals and an assist to give her 15 goals, 10 assists, and 40 points on the season. Her 15 goals are tied for the seventh most in a single season and her 40 points are the eighth most in a single season while her 10 assists are tied for seventh most.

- Senior Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) earned her 10th shutout and 17th win as she made five saves in the match. The 10 clean sheets are tied for the third most in program history.

- Barnouw now has 26 points this year followed by English with 23.
