No. 17 Squash Posts 1-2 Record Against Top-25 Teams at UVA Round Robin

THE BASICS

- Records: MIT (7-5); UVA (3-4); Dartmouth (2-1); Navy (8-3)

- Location: Charlottesville, Va. (McArthur Squash Courts)

- The Lead: The No. 17 MIT squash team took on three top-25 teams at the UVA Round Robin over the weekend. After falling in their first two matches, the Engineers came away with an exciting 5-4 win over Navy to conclude the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UVA:
 
-  The Cavaliers earned a sweep over the visiting Engineers.
 
- First-year Mero Elmarassy (Santa Clara, Calif.) fell in the top position to John Paul Tew. 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.
 
- In the fourth position, sophomore Bobby Albani (Newtown Square, Pa.) won the first set by an 11-9 score, but CJ Baldini took the next three, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8, to earn the victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. DARTMOUTH
 
- Sophomore Mitav Nayak (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) fell to Felix Feldman 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 in the seventh position, and Albani fell to Quintin Campbell, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 in the fifth ladder.
 
- A five-set match between graduate student Matt McManus (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Callan Venkatesan in the eighth position went to McManus as he dropped the first set, 11-3, before taking the next two and the decisive fifth by a score of 11-7.
 
- The Engineers won another five-set match as first-year John Gunton (Lawrenceville, N.J.) took the match in the fourth position by winning the final two sets. Senior Collin Wen (Short Hills, N.J.) also won a five-set match in the third position, 11-9, 1-11, 2-11, 11-7, 11-3.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. NAVY
 
- Hyun Su Price (Philadelphia, Pa.), Wen, and Gunton swept courts 2-4 with 3-0 victories.
 
- Senior Nikhil Kakarla (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned a 3-1 win in the sixth position as he defeated Tighe Mullarkey, 11-8, 12-14, 11-6, 11-7.
 
- Senior Yos Wagenmans (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Holden Woodward in the ninth position. 11-1, 11-6, 11-6.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT has an extended break and will play its next match in the new year when the Engineers will host Harvard at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 11 at the Zesiger Squash Courts.
