THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Trailing by one with 10 seconds remaining, first-year Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) went to the line and drained two free throws to give the MIT men's basketball team a thrilling one-point win over NEWMAC foe Springfield on Wednesday night at Rockwell Cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Pride took an early 9-2 lead on a layup from Curtiss Blische at 15:10 in the first half and continued to build their lead to as much as 11 on a Xoren Livingston three to make it 26-15 at the 8:18 mark.
- Sophomore Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) drained a three at 5:57, and eight-straight points by first-year Mike Ewing (Mendham, N.J.) put the Engineers in the lead as his three with 3:17 left in the half put MIT up 32-31. Springfield responded with a three from John Paulino, but first-year Michael Zhang (Jacksonville, Fla.) gave MIT the lead right back with a three of his own with 1:22 left as the Engineers ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 40-34 lead.
- MIT opened the second on a 6-0 run to go up 47-34 and a layup from Zhang at 15:01 gave the Engineers their largest lead 53-37. The Pride used a 7-0 run to get back to within single digits, but free throws by Lin with 12:16 left made it a 55-44 game.
- Livingston made back-to-back threes to get Springfield to five, and his three with 10:36 left tied the game at 56. Ewing hit from deep to put MIT up 63-60 but Livingston hit another three to tie the game with 5:17 left. Â
- Four-straight points from Livingston put the Pride up four with 1:48 left but with 37 seconds left, first-year Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) nailed a three to make it a one-point game. Goglin grabbed a defensive board and was sent to the line with 10 seconds left and hit both his shots to give MIT the 72-71 win.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Ewing led MIT with 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
- Lin scored 11 points with eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Dobie contributed 10 points while Minicozzi finished with 12.
- The Engineers shot 42.3% (11-26) from deep and 87.5% (7-8) from the charity stripe.
- Livingston led the Pride with 20 points. Â
