The Lead: MIT outscored the University of Southern Maine, 20-5, in the first quarter en route to a 67-43 non-conference women's basketball victory on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) led all players with 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After conceding the opening basket, graduate student
Paula Pieper (Greenville, S.C.) quickly replied with a jumper of her own which ignited a string of 17 unanswered points by MIT. Southern Maine ended its scoring drought when it hit a three-pointer with 3:25 on the clock, however, sophomore
Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) buried a three almost two minutes later for a 20-5 lead.

- The second quarter was a balanced affair as the Engineers had a 12-10 scoring edge, creating a 32-15 advantage at halftime.

- Exactly 15 seconds into the third quarter, junior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) drained a pair of free throws, sparking a 16-1 run that spanned almost five minutes. MIT maintained its comfortable cushion as its lead moved to 54-24 at the end of the frame.

- Sophomore
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) knocked down a three-pointer 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving the Engineers their largest lead of the night at 33 points. Despite the deficit the Huskies continued to attack, outscoring MIT, 19-10, for a 67-43 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Berman recorded 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) tallied eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Harrington finished with a career-high eight points to go along with five rebounds as Pieper generated eight assists, four steals, and four rebounds.

- The Engineers led the way in rebounds (52-29), second-chance points (8-2), bench scoring (22-15), and points in the paint (24-6). Both teams produced 16 points off turnovers.

- MIT shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from three-point range, and 100 percent (10-of-10) from the free throw line.

- Southern Maine shot 24.6 percent (15-of-61) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from behind the arc, and 70 percent (7-of-10) at the charity stripe.
